General Care Discussion :: Sexing question

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Thu Sep 25, 2008 8:09 pm   Sexing question

I'm kinda multi tasking right now so if it's here on the site somewhere I probably missed it but at what age can you start to sex a turtle ? From what I've been reading alot of people can tell by claw lengths and some other stuff.

I'm only curious because while I still dont have names yet the whole he/she thing is getting to me lol

Just pick a name that will work for either sex or you will be waiting a long time to pick out a name. Their shell needs to be 4+ inches before you can sex them.

See thats just the thing, I'm sorta bad with names. I only did what I could call a good job with my two leopard geckos and my cat... Gecko One: Sam / Samantha, Gecko Two: Lizzy. I had some help with them, as for the cat, his names Snoopy... only really chose that because as a kitten he'd "snoop" into things he wasnt suppose to.

Edit: Even if I do have names picked for either sex while it would make things somewhat simplified I stil lwould be going John this or Jane that.

just pick a unisex name, or take a good guess and either change it or live with it when you do find out.

I like Niko too. You could even switch to Niki if it's a girl.

Good point, about switching Niko to Niki if its a girl. I suppose Niko could also be a unisex name if my turtle turns out to be a hacker lol.

I kinda like Niko, I think I'll just stick with it regardless of sex. Now I just need to fix my avatar.
