General Care Discussion :: Hibernation??

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I'm away at college...
Just came home today, to find the water freezing - we recently moved, heaters broke and then my sister says they are not eating!!! :cry: So, I immediately took them out of their tanks and had them walking around in the room with the heat directly on them. What am I supposed to do? I am so broke, as you can imagine. I am willing to sacrifice and get 3 heaters...will that fix it?? :cry: I miss my babies so much and I just want them to be happy!

How big is your tank/enclosure? All you need to do is buy ONE submersible water heater thats has the appropriate wattage for your tank. How big are they? Their metabolism slows down when the waters too cold and suppresses their appetite. They should be in much better shape after you get the heater. Water should be around 75-80* (depending on how big they are).

Good luck! Its getting super cold super fast

NEVER apply heat directly to your turtle, even if they are freezing cold. You have to let them SLOWLY warm up, otherwise you can shock their system and kill them.

As Arisu said, buy yourself a water heater. They Are Cheap. You want one that is 3-5W per gallon, so a 50 gallon tank would need a 150-250W heater, depending on your room temperature. Get one that has a dial on it, so you can change the temp when needed.

Thanks! I didn't put the heat directly on them - just put the heater on the floor and they were walking around.
Well, I have 3 tank set-ups so, I'll have to get 3 heaters. Thanks, again!
I just bought a tin of tuna, so hopefully they'll eat that...they usually LOVE it when I decide to treat them.
