could you lay a ruler on the ground and then just hold him next to it while you take the picture?

I tend to take a picture of my turtle on a sheet of ruled paper. You just set the turtle down on the paper and take the picture really fast, but the paper will give you a scale and you can calculate actual length.

Why not just hold your turtle and place the ruler next to her to measure her. That's what I do with my turtles. That way you don't have to fumble with a camera as well. Just measure her and don't worry about taking a picture of the ruler.
