Im so sorry for your loss. Im not sure how to do it, but you might want to find out how to disinfect any thing that was used in Nitros tank in case there is something bacterial that could be transmitted?? Check this site for info. Nitro sounds like he had a really special relationship with you.

In response to the disinfecting idea.....the tank is drained, all items that she used I threw out. It's totally empty except for the hood and heat lamp. I wiped down her heater and cleaned her filter out for a good half hour or more. I wiped the glass down with those wipes that Tetra supplies and it smelled so awful from whatever chemical is in them. I read on here that people are not thrilled with them (after I used them of course). If I lived in a house I would have taken her tank outside and hosed it out and used cleanser, but in a 1 BR condo it's not possible anymore (thought mom and dad would love it if I moved back!). I'm not sure what other chemicals would be safe to use in Nitro's tank before I move the male turtle in. I don't want him to get sick from what Nitro had (if she was at all sick) but I don't want any harsh chemicals in his water either!

Dilute bleach is generally what's recommended for a serious tank cleaning. You can use a very dilute solution (10% is about average) to wipe everything down. Then rinse very well with water and let everything air dry. I'd also replace all the media in the filters, just in case anything's in there.
You're right about not wanting residues in the tank, so I'd stick to the bleach OR vinegar route, several people have used them safely and had great results.
