General Care Discussion :: Cloudy Water Problem

Well for the longest time my turtle tank (25g) was becoming extremely dirty in a just a few days. I have two res turtles that I feed floating pellets to twice a day. I thought it was possibly me overfeeding them so I started to feed them three times a day in smaller amounts. When that still didn't work I finally went out and just bought a new filter figuring that this could be the only cause to the problem.

Since I got a new filter everything has been running a lot smoother up until a few days ago. I noticed one day when I woke up the water looked really cloudy and white. The past few days the water hasn't changed much and looks even murkier then before. I don't know what it could possibly be anymore since I've cleaned the whole tank and am using a brand new filter. If anyone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it because I'm about to go buy a bigger tank for them so they can have more room and I don't want to come across this problem again.

How big are those RES?

What kind of filter is the one you recently bought and what size tank is it rated for? How long had it been running before the water got cloudy?

Could it simply be the new tank syndrome? (or in your case- filter?)

What is happening is that you, and your tank, is going through "new tank syndrom". Your bacteria is going wild when you start over and not getting your bacteria filtration going. You will need to make 50% water changes until your bacteria gets established in the filter pump. Next make sure that you filter pump is exchanging the water at least 5 times per hour. (gph) You can cut back on your feeding a little. If he is 3 inches or over you can feed him every other day and he will be ok. m.
