General Care Discussion :: RES Need Good Home

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Tue Jan 20, 2009 2:43 pm   RES Need Good Home

I am going through a personal crisis right now and found that I just can't keep up with all my turtles right now. It's too much. I need to offload some of them, but I want to make sure they go to a good home. I don't want them to get sick because I can't care for them properly.

I need to give up 2 of my RES. Donny is male, currently between 4-5". He does have some shell fungus issues still, but it is now under control and I have plenty of cream to give you. Leo is now 2-3" and is a very healthy, active, and friendly guy. He's not afraid to bask in front of people, eat out of our hands, etc. he even will crawl into my hand if I put it in the tank.

I have a complete 55 gallon setup for Leo with 2 heaters, filters, and custom above tank basking area. I would like to get $50 for the setup if possible.

I live in Orange County, CA and would like to get these guys a new home ASAP. I don't want them to get sick because I can't keep up with them. Please PM me if you are interested or know of someone. I will give you my phone number.

I am also giving up 2 of my boxies. I posted more info in the boxie section if you are interested.

I can understand you are having personal issues, so I don't need any further info than that. But turtles are so low maintenance, I can't imagine them getting sick from a bit of improper care. I mean, people show up to the board all of the time having kept turtles in like 2 inches of water in too small of a tank for years and they are still fine.

If you would like, you can describe what you are doing for routine maintenance and maybe we can help you find places to lighten your work load. Or if you have a friend/family member that could help you out with the turtles?

Just an alternative to giving them up, since you'll have a hard time finding someone who will care for them up to your standards!

Thanks for your interest in the help, but I really need to cut back. I've got 8 right now. I understand proper maintenance schedules and that they are not very high maintenance, but I just can't keep up with it right now. They're being neglected. I took in 4 of these guys as rescues and nursed 3 of them back to health from near death. I don't want them to get back to that point just because I can't keep up with them.

The other suggestion I would have is to contact your local humane society or animal shelter and tell them that you have some turtles for adoption. They should allow you to become a "foster parent" until someone comes by for the turtles. They would be able to put them up on PetFinder too. Good luck!

If anyone on the forum can't help, the California Turtle & Tortoise Club http://www.tortoise.org/ might be your best bet. I'm sorry to hear you're going through a tough time... hopefully things will get better soon.
