General Care Discussion :: You sure Turtles are ok alone

A week ago I had a heating problem and last one of my turtles. Now the remaining one is acting funny. In a way that I am not sure how to even describe. Like she is not eating AS much.. but still eats. Basking less, never using his log any more .

Should this be looked into or is this just a case of transference .

Yes joey. Whether they are aggressive like RES or more amenable to co-habitation, no reptiles have mammal-like bonds with each other. It's just not in their nature.

What I'd be more concerned for is that your surviving turtle is ill. If she's not eating well and behaving weirdly, I'd keep a close eye on her. The temperature drop could have made her ill.

It was a temp raise. And spaz is eating just not has much as normal. Like normal he would tear those sticks up. but now he like eats to than stops .

Do you know the symptoms of RI? Poor appetite, lethargy, swollen or irritated eyes, yawning a lot or breathing with the mouth open, swimming loppsided or difficulty submerging, mucus around the mouth or nose. A turtle won't show all these symptoms unless he's very sick.

Do you have a good herp vet? Even if your turt doesn't need one now, it's a good idea to find one so when you need a good herp vet, you'll know where to go. Your regular vet may be able to recommend a good one.

Cn they check for RI with a stool sample ?

No - a stool sample check will only tell if there are internal parasites. It's highly recommended though.

Do you think a turtle would eat more if there was competition around? I was asking because if that's possible, then your turtle could've been eating more because he was feeling territorial or aggressive towards the other turtle and now that he's gone, he can eat regularly.

I'm not even remotely sure about this, it's just a theory.
