i bought some anacharis for my two turtles yesterday and while i was researching info about the plant, i've found that there is pewter on the bottom of the plant. i've rinsed the plant and also took the rubberband and pewter thingy out. however, i did not cut off the bottom part of the plant. i've left the plant in my turtle tank for around 5 hours and took it out once i found out about it. i was wondering if the pewter thingy can cause harm on my turtle. i have done a 50% water change today.

should i clean my whole tank and will the pewter thing hurt my turtles?

Are you talking about the small metal ring that weights the plant down?

It's generally lead, definitely take it off if you haven't already.

It is most likely not pewter, but lead, which is really soft and pliable. It should be taken off the plants, as it will eventually leach into the water. Since you said you took it off before putting the plants in the water, there shouldn't be any problem with the plants if you didn't cut off the ends. Personally, though, I do cut the ends of the strands before I let them float in the water---with "fresh" ends, the stalk can draw water up it more easily. The strands also seem to root faster that way.

hahaha, not that you can keep them long enough for them to really root anyway. I bought some Anacharis for my RES and he has eaten almost all of it.

Hey does anyone kow how to keep this plant fresh? I only want to put a few stand in at a time and keep the rest in a seperate bowl. Can I refrigerate it?

refrigeration probably isn't a good idea, that usually doesn't work for most plants that are still alive. You should get a small (like 1 gallon Beta aquarium) and keep the plants in there with a small filter.

yeah if you do this maybe put some guppies n b/c the plants need the ammonia to grow.... maybe you will get more anachris and eventually only have to buy every once in awhile

or a Beta cause it is a Beta aquarium, I mean you're not planning on putting the fish in with the turtle...

If you keep the strands in clean water and in good light, they should root fairly easily.

Agree with Marisa and no need for filters or guppies but some plant food for aquatic plants will help if you want to keep it long term
