General Care Discussion :: The Cortez Egg Laying Saga Continues

Ok everyone... I told you two weeks ago Cortez laid her eggs. Since then, she seemed to be fine. Had a healthy appetite, seemed active in her tank... only she was sleeping a lot more. But after five eggs coming out your tail, I figured I would be tired too.

A few days after her egg laying I tried to take her out of her tank one day to let her walk around... she gasped like she was in pain! I looked at her bottom and her legs and butt were all pinkish. I got so scared, I thought she was bleeding internally.

I rushed to put her back in the tank... her color turned back to normal, and so did she. It was very weird. I tried to take her out of the tank again a day or two later... she wasn't walking very good... so I made an appointment for the vet.

The vet took her x-ray... and found out she had 5 more eggs in her belly!

He gave her a shot, which she hated, in order to induce her labor. He said that in about 3 hours it should take effect, and we should get her home and put her in a safe place.

Well we didn't even make it home before she went into labor! At first she was scrambling on the floor of the car by my feet. (The passenger side) Then suddenly, she becomes still. Her tail starts kicking up... and then it gets bigger and bigger. I said "Mom, I don't think we are going to make it home."

The first 4 came out no problem... but the fifth one took a little longer to come out. And it seemed harder for her to get out.

you may be surprised, but someone on this forum had a turtle that laid like 10 clutches in a span of a couple weeks (that may be an exaggeration) but none theless it was crazy haha

Glad it worked out for ya and if its not to personal of a question what did the vet trip cost ya ? I only ask because I'm curious what a situation like that would run a person... I imagine the xray was he bulk of it.

Well the last trip was $160... for the x-ray, the shot for inducing labor, and he gave her a shot of fluids to keep her hydrated.

The vet also said that in order to reduce her clutches, we needed to shorten the amount of time that her light was on. With the light on most of the day, she thinks its summer time!! Time to lay eggs!!

So for that person that laid 10 clutches or so, the vet said that is not good for the turtle... it could wear them out. Their little bodies can only take but so much.

I am also supposed to take her back to the vet in two weeks to make sure she didn't develop more eggs.

After this, I think I need to get pet insurance.
