General Care Discussion :: too many turtles...places to take them in?

So, when people don't/can't take care of their turtles anymore, me and my roommate decide to take care of them. We now have 7 turtles in my 55 gallon setup...this is an obvious problem. They are already starting to fight and one of my turtles has a scar on his face from the fight. I have a 10 gallon tank that could support 1 or 2 seeing as they are only an inch big. Where can I find homes for these turtles or find someone to take care of them? Will pet stores take them in? Advice is much appreciated.

Hi, where are you located? You can try and find someone to adopt them or maybe donate to a school or local nature center.

It's likely that the pet stores won't take them in, unless you have a locally owned and operated store around. I have one down the road, for example, that takes in rescue small critters and reptiles and let's people adopt them.

For now, your best option is to go to Walmart and buy as many 40+ gallon rubbermaid containers that you need for temporary housing. These plastic containers can be used for periods of time usually with no issues, though you'll want to inspect the tanks daily for any leaks or cracking and replace them as needed.

I am living in Tucson right now but will frequently be in southern California. I'd really appreciate someone taking a turtle.

I like the rubbermaid idea...it would make a good temporary home. Finding a way to filter it might be a hassle. Thanks for the ideas...

Why don't you try to advertise them somewhere, like people do when their dog has puppies and they want to give them away.

same here, have 9 turtle.
the 2 turtle in 53 gallon (5" and 3.2" male and male)
the 2 turtle in 88 gallon (8" and 8.2" both of the female)
the 1 turtle in 19 gallon (Respiration Infection, Quarantine Tank. 4" male)
the 3 turtle in 19 gallon ( new turtle, in Quarantine tank. 4" 3.2" 4.2")
the 1 turtle in 21 gallon (new turtle, in quarantine container 9")

for small aquarium and container (19-21)
i change the water 3 days 1 more time

for 53 and 88 i change the water
seven days, 2/3 remove, 2/3 add the clean water.

thats all, clean the filter.
check the ammonia and Ph.

but i just love my turtle, i just dont want to give my turtle to school or my friends and i dont want to make them gone. i scared if people punished my turtle. thats why. some people give me.

for along time i just have 5 turtle.
but thats the new turtle come 4 turtle.

so its need a hard work my friends. haha but for me its ok

I was looking on petfinder.com one time, and they have res and other reptiles listed on there.

(I had a good experience last summer with petfinder .. I found an abandoned ten month-old bull terrier puppy (a somewhat difficult breed to 'place' with a new family .. ).

I was a little nervous when the local Animal Control Officer placed an ad for someone to adopt the puppy on Petfinder, but apparently a good home was found for the dog in this way.
