Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Mar 11, 2009 8:59 am   another great problem and i need to solved it, help

i have 9 turtles, after school finish (15.30) i taking a bath. after that i look my turtle, everyday from monday - friday, except saturday and sunday.
well i use fish net, to take up his/her poo and scutes. also i feeding them.
yeah at night, i close the door and let them sleep. my father see it everyday. i know something strange in here now. later, he say to me, you know son, in Hong kong people release 3 turtles because crisis. and thats shock me, what and why you talk to me on this case, after that next day he say son where is your sick turtle. and i said (i lie, because i scare) there is no sick turtle here, they are all happy, because my father can give my turtle chinese medicine (and i know, its poisonus), you know when i started to read book about turtle, and find something information about red ear slider and i found this website, my money all for the turtle. my parents doesnt support me. then i know he gonna make an outdoor pond, and my father want the 4 turtle put in there, so i scared if my father will kill it. i know my father started hate turtle. like my arowana, he say why you buy big aquarium, just put it in a smaller aquarium, like before. well look, you bring him to vet and you care of the so much. THEN I WAS SHOCK IN HERE. after that he say, look at the arowana, me as parents doesnt do anything. but look the arowana was healty. yeah i know i cant counter what he say. but i just let it go. because you know, for me animal is good friends.
about my mother, my mother doesnt do anything, she just tell anyone, i take care about turtle. and i think its normal.
but my father, the problem is my father.

please help, what can i do. this is serious. i dont want release it into the wild. please help me.
P.S = i tell my father, lets check in internet, look at the information, and father will know something, then he just doesnt believe me.

how??

A lot of teenagers have problems with their parents not supporting their turtle care. As your father seems pretty set on reducing the number of turtles you currently have, I think the best thing you can do is compromise with him.
If he's not interested in learning what the internet has to offer for turtle care perhaps you can talk to him and tell him what you need to find in a good perspective turtle home so he can help you rehome some of the turtles. That way your father knows you're taking responsibility to reduce the number of turtles and you're saving the turtles from a less happy ending.

9 turtles is alot of turtles. Do you have uvb lights, heat lamps, dry basking areas, water heaters, and powerful filters on all of those tanks for your turts?
2 1/2 inch RES Mikey
55 gallon tank
Homebuilt sump filter at around 300 gph
3 African Chiclids in a separate tank.

i want to buy UVB lights, but on the morning, my maid. take all my turtle and bring it to outside, in 8 am, for sunlight, so i think we dont have to buy UVB.
heat lamps yes i have it (40 W)
yes basking area have it
water heater (dont use it, i live in indonesian, from january -december, its 25-30 Celcius)
powerful filter, yes i have it.

Your made takes your turtles out every day for? If so that's sweet! Also do you have filters on each tank?

my advice is to compromise with your dad and give up a few turtles, that would make dad happy and allow you to properly care for the ones you keep. tell dad you'll find new homes for 7 and keep 2 in the bigger tanks. if your set on building an outdoor area for the others get a stock tank or something bigger to hold them in until it's done.

When I suggested you "rehome" your turtles I meant that you find them new owners. Sorry if my wording wasn't clear.

At a certain point people simply have too many animals to properly give them the care that they need. You did a wonderful thing by saving all 9 turtles but I think it sounds like you are overwhelmed with caring for them.

If you could find a few responsible people to take some of the turtles both you and the turtles would be happier. You could give your remaining turtles more care and the others would be in good new homes.
