General Care Discussion :: For a hatchling..

When I got my first two turtles they were already eating pellets and greens. This new hatchling (story in link below) I have no idea about.

Are pellets (HB turtle bites, or reptomin) ok for such a bitty one? (the HB bites seem smaller)
Which size tank should I start him out in: the 10 gallon or 30 gallon? He is so tiny I am not sure filling it all the way up at first is a good idea. (?)

He/she has only been in our home since yesterday. He does have a heat lamp over his "litterbox" (tank), with a rock for basking. Will have his uvb in a few days, but I can take him outside for a bit until it gets here.

Oops, just realized my choices are a 10 gallon tank or 20 long. I do not have a spare 30 gallon.

Hey, I would start in the 20 gal, but increase the water level gradually. The 10 gal. is really small once you put everything in it.

I agree. Start with the 20 gallon, and it'll last you a little bit longer (though keep in mind you'll probably need a new one in about a year).

Reading your other post though, I agree that it would be best to put it back where you found it. I think in most places it's actually illegal to take an animal from the wild.

I would use the 20 gal as well. (actually I DID when Pickle was small) I would fill it up at least twice as deep as his shell is long so he doesn't hurt himself jumping off his dock. The more water he has the better really. The water quality will be better and he will have more room to move around. Just put places for him to rest like a reptile hammock under water or some plastic plants. Even big turtles appreciate places to rest!
