General Care Discussion :: Average Cost of Vet

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Apr 15, 2009 6:55 pm   Average Cost of Vet

I am about to take Momo to the vet for the first time for a shell check. I believe she has a spot of shell rot.... I have called many places to compare prices and I have gotten from the lowest of 40 to the highest being about 70. And then the cost of any other treatments or meds.

Does this sound about right??

Obviously with the economy here being the way it is money is tight, but I am willing to pay what I have to, to help her get better.

Just thought I would check what most people have ever paid to get their turt checked.

Thanks..
Charissa =)

I paid $55 for the visit and two shots when my RES was sick.

That price range sounds like what we'd pay around here in Dallas.

In the Dallas area I recommend the Preston Road Animal Hospital (at 635 and Preston). Dr. Chabira is the one to see. The number is 972.239.1309. I found her after being very disappointed by two other vets. She, in contrast, knows her turtles.

The first visit might incur a "office or administrative" fee. My current vet charges $70 for a routine visit.

Wow, the lowest was 40 dollars? I expected much higher than that. Like, hundreds of dollars higher. To be able to take an exotic pet to the vet for that price, you are very lucky. (I'm assuming that the vet you picked is in good shape and provides very good care).

It cost somewhere between 300 to 400 to get my cat's tooth pulled last year. (She's 9, it's actually normal for older cats to lose their teeth). The least expensive thing on the bill was the pulling or the tooth. The rest was because of the sleepy drugs, medication, looking at her, sterilization procedures, use of equipment. My personal "fave" (sarcasm) was when I had to have a different cat put to sleep, and this one vet wanted to examine him first, then charge us for it. We did not go to that vet, I found that insulting. (Having your animals put to sleep is such an emotional experience that it should be free, anyways).
