General Care Discussion :: Repti Glo

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

In my world, any UV is still UV and does it's job for the most part.

I think since the sun in the desert climate is probably stronger than the sun in a tropical climate, the desert bulb might have stronger UV rays.

I've heard of some UV bulbs that penetrate into a reptile's muscles specifically to somehow keep them healthier. I do not know the particulars, or how well that works depending on the species, but I find it very interesting. I think those things are good to think about if you are looking into more ways to keep your reptiles healthy.

In any case, I'm going to look this up some more.

Reptiles are so much more fascinating than mammals.

Edit: I did some research... I thought I had read this somewhere before and I was right. I *heart* this website too.

Tropical is perfect. It is the "5.0" version. The "10.0" version has been known to cause eye problems. It produces more UVB than needed.

And yes, my UVB is VERY bright.

On a completely unrelated note, is it just me or are these UVB bulbs super bright?

The tropical one will be fine. They are super bright.

I use a daylight bulb right now, which really isn't the UVB that I thought it was (I read the explanation wrong), which I noticed very recently. I am going to get the repti-glo tropical UVB soon. And I'm making my dad buy it since I bought the last stuff they needed. The daylight bulb is cool though, because it's blue, they really like sitting under it, and it gives them a natural photoperiod. I'm more concerned with photoperiod than UV rays for some reason. I know I shouldn't, but their behavior depends on daylight and night time a little more than UV sometimes, and even though it's not actual UV, they still bask under it. At least I know when I get the REAL UVB they will be more willing to bask.

Considering how my turtles like to STARE into the lights, I can imagine 10.0 would cause problems.

Part of why I don't like the infared bulb that I am getting rid of very soon. Typhoon stares right into it, like she telepathically thinks she can shut it off. They do sleep under it on their basking log now for the whole night, but I prefer that they sleep in the water, since it is more natural. They might feel safer too.

I prefers the desert kinds though :P No reasons, I just like it as it's not as 'white' as the tropical, more yellowish .

The Repti Glo 5.0 is the best choice BUT you need to get the 26 watt version not the 13 watt version. The 13 watt bulb is just too weak to do any good.

Spotsmama - How about if we use 2 bulb of 13watt bulb? Does it will give the same exposures as 26watt bulb?

Light bulbs should be completely sealed, so you should be able to use it as soon as it is COMPLETELY DRY. If it's not, bad things will happen. If it's damaged, it just won't turn on!

And no, two 13W bulbs won't equal a 26W bulb. At the best, you could move the bulb closer, but basically the waves won't be able to make it to the turtle.
