General Care Discussion :: Turtles and Vets?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun May 03, 2009 12:37 am   Turtles and Vets?

When you buy a turtle from a pet store, should you take it to a herp vet shortly to have him/her check if the turtle is healthy? Or to give it any preventive disease shots? Also, when you buy a turtle from a pet store, are there any documents you are supposed to be given?

Thanks guys!

You dont really have to but if you take it they will check its overall health and usually give it some dewormer to make sure it kills worms if he has them.

About the papers, it depends on the state you are in. Believe it or not, there are laws in some places about keeping RES as pets. There's a topic around here some which has a list of most of the sites and what you can and cannot have for a pet as far as turtles are concerned.

I honestly wouldn't bring a turtle to the vet after buying it from a pet store, simply because I know what to look for in a healthy reptile and I wouldn't buy a sick animal. Chances are, that sick turtle would end up dying on me inevitably and I am not one to want to deal with that. Unless I was intending to rescue a sick turtle, then I'd be down for that. If you seriously suspect your turtle is sick, please take it to a vet, or, if you think it's minor, post a topic with clear photographs in the Urgent Care forum.

There are no preventive shots that I know of, but if you have the money, taking a newly-purchased turtle to a herp vet isn't a bad idea. It gives you a chance to assess the vet as well as having the turtle checked out. It's good to know of a decent vet to take your turtle to if there should be an emergency.
