General Care Discussion :: Turtle vomiting due to lettuce?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi all, I'm new to this forum. I love that there's a place to go to find out things but I still have a one question that I was hoping to get an answer to. Or at least your honest opinion since you all are turtle lovers.

My daughter was given a turtle for her birthday in February and since she's like most kids, I'm taking care the the lil' thing. I don't know how old she is, she's about 4 inches wide.

For the first month and a half we had her all we gave her to eat was boiled chicken and brine shrimp. She wouldn't eat the pellets we had for her. After trying a few different kinds, we found one she liked and we stopped with the chicken.

I'm feeding her pellets every other day and a lettuce on the other days. She doesn't always eat her lettuce and I'm giving her a teaspoon of pellets so I don't think I'm overfeeding. But she's been throwing up and normally the day after she eats her lettuce. Do you think it could be the lettuce?

I really feel bad for her when this happens. It never happened when we gave her the chicken. Should I switch back?

I would love any advice you can give. Susana

kev-pper - If your turtle is eating the pellets I would only feed that to him for a couple of weeks and try the lettuce on one of the off feeding days. Also check on the teaspoon full that you are feeding. It may be too much. Is it more than the size of the head? Check on your basking temps with the uvb. You want to make sure he is digesting and metabolizing the food properly. m.

How big of lettuce piece do you give her?
My female has thrown up a few times, so I started giving her smaller pieces of lettuce, and I haven't had the problem since.
Also, make sure you take out the old lettuce that she hasn't eaten before you put in fresh lettuce.

Thanks for the tips. I'm reducing her pellets to 1/2 tsp, that looks about the size of her head. The lettuce I give her is smaller than her shell.

I'll see if that works better for her.
