I have a 1 n a half year old hieroglyphic river cooter about 5-6" in length and I have noticed this more recently actually but im sure its not to do with parameters because they have been the same his whole life. anyway he tends to take lots of little naps throughout the day. any ideas as to why??

Most animals do, for a variety of reasons. First, in the wild, animals take naps rather than sleep because of predators. Second, in the tank, it's not exactly a thrilling life. And many more reasons. My turtle is frequently napping, so don't worry too much about it.

The only time to worry is if your turtle becomes truly lethargic. That would be if they don't respond to food, to intrusion by your hands, to changes in the tank. If they are just laying on the basking area without moving for hours. Then you need to get to a vet.

If you want to minimize the naps, you can try to provide some entertainment for your turtle, like fish to chase, or change up the tank.
