What do I do when my turtle is bitting pieces off of his foam shelf? and why would he be bitting pieces off of his foam shelf.

Do you give your turtle cuttlebone? If not, try giving him/her some and see if that helps.

Welcome. Sometimes they're looking for more calcium (not enough in the diet). Try what meltedspork suggested. It might be good to try another material for a basking area as well.

well we put a piece of cuttlebone in his tank about 3 days ago and he has completely ignored it and is continuing to bite chunks off his foam shelf. any suggestions on what we should do now?

Leave the cuttlebone in the tank and switch out the basking platform for a different type. There's a nice acrylic platform that a lot of us use. A link to an example is below. Also, cork bark makes an excellent platform. Turtles like it.

Mine did this too. I'm getting a plastic one that I know they can't bite apart.

I'm getting cuttlebone soon, too.
