It's hard to lose any animal, but to literally lose one, it's sometimes easier to have a pet pass away on you instead because at least then you have closure, you aren't wondering "What if?"

You mentioned abandoned houses around. Are you able to go inside of them? It's possible that he may have wandered inside and is in one of them. You may want to check. And he won't really be able to hear you speaking, so you may want to not make any noise when going through places so that the vibrations from your voice doesn't scare him into hiding.

I am definitely wondering "What if". I totally understand what you mean about having closure and knowing the outcome - I worry that he won't be able to eat without water and may have gone in the wrong direction away from water sources. I just don't want him to suffer.

Thanks for the tip on staying quiet. I've just been blabbering away talking to him in case he's out there. We have sooo many chameleons, geckos and other lizards around here and they are everywhere. Each time they move, I'm always hoping it's Bubba and it's always them instead. He's so little he could be anywhere or under anything, even an individual leaf - it's like finding a needle in a haystack unless he shows up in someone's pond or pool. *sigh*

The vacant houses across the street are gutted and locked up. They are for sale, waiting for someone to renovate but he wouldn't be able to get into them, just around their yards.

Three doors down there are three houses in a row being built. There is a lot of sand on site that might attract him but I figured it would be noisy and most likely scare him away instead.

I once had two female RES and one of them ran away. They were both given to me by a coworker. I searched everywhere but to no avail. Wild RES can be found all over our neighborhood because of the retention ponds and natural surroundings.
The remaining female lived alone for several months until another friend offered me a young male. Of course, I couldn't resist. My female has become domesticated and will normally stay on the back patio (of course, I keep a close eye one her). But, when she done with her daily exercise she heads back to the door. She will keep checking the door until it is opened and goes back into the house. The younger male likes to explore the yard but will also return to the door.
