Hey guys, quick question. Someone is offering me a protien skimmer. Is this something I should get for my tank or do turtles not need it? On one hand, I havent' heard of them before so I wanna just pass it up but on the other hand, I'm constantly finding things my turtle needs that people haven't told me about. So I figure I'll run this by ya'll real quick.

Depends, if it's going to take up extra space, I'd pass, but I have found a layer of oil and whatnot on the top of my turtle's tank water. However, you can set your filter output to break the surface and it minimizes it. I think most people don't have them because it's an added expense that is unnecessary. If you are paying for it, I would probably pass unless it's like $5.

It's about 20. When I was looking it up online, they were talking about its use with a salt-water tank so that really threw me off. What's that oil residue from? I just did a complete cleaning on my tank yesterday and I saw that too.

I'll probably pass on the protein skimmer though.

I've noticed a film in our tank as well. I thought maybe it was from the fish food. I use a water bottle and skim as much as I can off daily. It still looks icky, but the water tests fine.

I don't think I've ever had this layer but I have 2 hang on filters so the surface is not still at all...it's probably from waste and stuff though.

Protein skimmers DON"T work in fresh water tanks...And good protein skimmers for small MARINE tanks start at around $250 :wink:

I am not fond of skimmers. I have taken care of any proteins by having a filter pump that pumps the 5x per hour exchange rate. That is another advantage of having a higher filter pump output. I keep the water moving and there in no film on the water. With that said, I am sure you could have enough trash and oil in you tank to over come most any water exchange rate. m.

This overflow takes care of all the film that might form on my water. It allows for greater light penetration too.
