General Care Discussion :: how to take a besking area temp

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

on both my setups I have a zoo med turtle tough bulb, zoo med dome fixture and a zoo med lamp stand so one would think basking temps would be a no brainer. one would think just adjust the light to the correct height and your all set, anyhow just so you know beforehand Im set to the max on the lamp stand and cant go higher and im 1 foot 6 inches from the docks on both tanks

now I turn on the light in the morning and check the temp with a regular thermometer for about 15 min and I get a nice reading of about 87 but if I leave the thermometer for over a hour i get high 90's low 100

my question is why does it seem to creep up like this, now if i cool the thermometer in water and re check for 15 min im at the cozy 80's, how long should i test temps or am i really roasting my turtles

Well, think of it this way: if it gets too hot or too cold, the turtle will move away. :)

I don't know the answer to your question, because I don't monitor my basking
area temperature.

You can try confirming the temp with another thermometer. But if your thermometer is functioning properly, then the readings are accurate. The basking area heats up throughout the day, it's not like a constant temperature being maintained as long as the light is on. It warms up gradually, then cools down when the light is off.

What kind of therm. are you using?

yes a new thermometer and a change to the setup got my temps back to a cozy 10 warmer than water temp, the water is a bit hotter with the summer heat but today its back to a cozy 77, im a little less freakish over temps now as I think they would have to deal with excess heat in nature so let them deal and worry more about the lower wisconsin temps than highs but i got some kick-backside heaters for the cold all ready to keep it toasty

anyhow all is well in turtleville and thanks for your help
