General Care Discussion :: two simple questions for my second RES

i am about to buy a second RES and this one is very small. as big as they hatch or bigger idk. i have one about the size of a cd so 2 questions... 1) should i put them together? 2)can i feed the baby guppys or should i buy pellets?

You probably want to rethink getting another aquatic turtle. Another RES, in particular. Unless you're prepared to take care of two 100+ gallon tanks and their inhabitants, I would focus on your first RES, which isn't even fully grown.

The older, larger, RES will not like the idea of sharing his space with a much smaller turtle, so be aware that the little one will get attacked.

Pellets are a staple, they don't cover the entire nutritional pyramid, just as humans can't eat one thing and survive (other than seeds). You'll want to start with a quality pellet and go from there then include salad veggies and cuttlebone. Additionally, fish alone do not suffice. Your turtle needs a varied diet.


I got my current turtle for $10 too, just be wary of the seller and look for the healthiest turtle.

Out of the options given, definetly keep them seperate and feed them pellets.

Pellets should be their regular food, and they should get other stuff as treats. Read the section about what to and what not to feed your RES for more info.

Definetly don't mix ages, the bigger RES will show dominance over the smaller one, and nothing good will come of that. I also think you should reconsider getting a second turtle at all, it's a big, long term, expensive committment.

I would probably keep them separate, too. I introduced my younger male RES when he was about 3.5 inches to my female about 6 inches. My female has been accustomed to having a roomate since she was a hatchling.

I second what he said. If I could do it all over again I would only have one RES.

I concur with all of them above, keep them seperate, my two RES I bought together and they're from the same hatch so they're the same size, they get along right now but who knows what the future holds. I'm not too much into judging but if you want to get a 2nd RES do fully research all the links to this site and switch up your turtles diet cuz it is pretty expensive.

I used to think my two RES were getting along fine and sort of kissed each other... well I found out today those little kisses are no other than little attacks. They're becoming a bit aggressive to each other so I'm getting an extra tank and the whole kit again.

They normally are very quiet and they swim around and stuff. My little sister noticed they sometimes face each other and sort of touch each other's face in a gentle way.

I did put attention yesterday and noticed the act, indeed, is kinda gentle but they're definitely attacking each other since they are attempting to get to the eyes by scratching each other so I had to separate them.

The weird thing is the younger one "attacks" the older one and she doesn't defend very well so I had to separate them.

I'm glad to hear you care enough about your turtles to separate them. Good luck. Turtles would rather have their own space and room anyway.
