thank you all for your answers....

Do you have small pebbles in your tank?
Yes I do, I got big pebbles used as gravel.

Actually my parents bought me a new one cause they tought I was very sad (wich I was...) and i'll get it later.... It was before you told me not to....

Tank size right now is 100x45x50 but next mounth I'm getting the new one - 127x50x65 wich will be fine for them right now (6 cm each) and when they will grow i'll stay with one.

Many thanks,
...and hope to upload pictures of the tank and the new mate soon.

Looks like a good tank, if my calculations are correct, you are at about a 50 gallon right now and your new tank will be about 100 gallons. It's important to know that if you have 2 females, you may end up needing to double your new tank sometime in the future, or split them up.

Also, ANY new turtle needs to have a 90 day quarantine period before adding them to a healthy turtle. In your case, you should separate them as soon as possible since you don't know what killed the other turtle yet. You need to give your previous turtle at least 90 days by themselves to see if they are healthy and the new one 90 days to make sure they aren't bringing a disease to the table. Otherwise, you may end up with two dead turtles in the near future ...

James - No, not an environmental scientist, I'm a chemist, so I work with a lot of different types of scientists, though I'm mainly in biology, so I haven't had many dealings with environmental types. I find it's a part of science that is disappearing, probably from lack of interest and a realization that intramural science achieves goals faster (i.e. training scientists to do many things and work in teams with others that can do many things, rather than have a team composed of specialists). I am certainly happy to try to answer questions or find answers to questions, if you want to PM me!

Poor thing. I'm very sorry you lost him. I don't think it's possible to say he died of a respiratory infection, especially since you say he had none of the symptoms.

With the puffiness under the chin and the open mouth, it does look like he was trying to breathe. Perhaps something got lodged inside him and he couldn't cough it out? You never noticed him yawning or breathing with his mouth open?

It sounds like you had provided a decent habitat and you needn't blame yourself for his passing.

I have to ask---in that video, is the turtle who was basking the one that died? If so, what is that dark ring around his eye?

Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.
