Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I have two red ear sliders, a 50 gallon tank, a great filter, basking lamp, heater and my turtles have these dark green spots on their shells since I got them two years ago. It doesn't look any thing like shell rot, I put this aquatic turtle lotion on their shell but it still hasn't cleaned the shells up, what can I do?

Might be algae... but pics would help.

If the lotion is Vitashell, I wouldn't use it. The spots have been there for two years? Pics of them when the shells are dry would be helpful.

You can't copy and post pictures onto the forum, you need to host it on a web hosting site, such as, www.imageshack.com and then copy the forum link they have for your photo.

My turtle has the green stuff too that came up recently. I think it may just be algea. Should I just try to wipe it off every now and then and just not worry about it?

if you see algae growing somewhere in your tank, chances are it does on your turtle's shell too...

happens to mine occasionally...

b-on - Not having a picture I would guess that it is algea. I would suggest that you use warm water and plain table salt. Dilute the salt in the water and gently brush it off with a soft tooth brush. Salt should take the algea off and the turtle will not like the brushing one bit. Let the turtle dry with the salt on and then rinse off after dry. That should help and will not harm your turtle.
