Get rid of the gravel ASAP. You may not see them eating it but they will and it could kill them.
Second, with such a small tank you do not have to worry so much about all this cycling stuff. Just use water conditioner and change the water frequently (just like you are doing). Also, if you don't clean your filter it will start to not work well. I have read this is a no-no, but I run all my filter thru the dishwasher.
I started with a 10 gal then a 20 gallon and then my 75 gal. Only with my 75 gal do I even consider the beneficial bacteria angle. And all I do is keep the top of the three layers of filter subtrate in the tank water when I clean the filter. Also, I fill the tank up directly from the tap (be careful as to the temp). My turtles have thrived since I got them. Lastly, I would consider geting a separate UVB bulb (5.0 -- 26w). It sounds like you have a lucky turtle to have an owner who cares as much as you do.
