General Care Discussion :: About to buy a turtle, but I have a question

I'm about to buy a red-eared slider from Petco, and at petco the red eared sliders are with other turtles in the same tank. I was wondering if there is any way I might have to help the new red eared slider adjust to its new environment alone.

I've done my basic care research and setup, feeding, all that stuff, but I would like to know if thats all I need to know.

JFA-head - Red do just fine by themselves. They are loaners and prefer it that way.

They are alright alone, but like many other creatures, a companion is good for them. But yes they are fine alone. So I suggest if you have enough housing space for 2, get the go-ahead. Have fun!

If you get more than one, be prepared for them to fight and for you to set up new accomodations. You can add fish for mind stimulation, my RES has 4 fish in his tank and he chases them often.

They are in a aquarium together. Will they lay their eggs in the tank? Will the babies hatch underwater? Should I take the eggs out of the tank?

I think of turtles as more neutral toward a companion, than like or dislike.

If you are that worried about eggs, especially fertile ones, you should ask the employees if there have been both male and females in the tank together. If there have, any of the females could possibly be gravid. You can either get a male to avoid this completely, or, hope luck is one your side. Even if you take home a female, just so you know, they sometimes will produce infertile eggs.
