General Care Discussion :: green water

I'm a bit confused about why sometimes my water turns gree inside a week and other times it takes 6 weeks. I have a single female res. shes adout 10" long and 6" wide. we got her on a trip to NJ. and she was the size of a quarter so she prospered well. She picky about food, right now she only will eat earthworms and superworms.
Shes in a 90 gal. tank,heated to 74 deg. filtration cycles entire tank in 1 hr. Now Im constantly fighting the alge issue(green water). Is there anything I can do to regulate this or at least keep it to a minimum?

I have a plecos fishy to help me..... But your turtle is very large so might get eaten.....

dp310 -- When sizing a tank for a turtle you should have 10 gallons per inch. Next, Feeding your turtle only earthworms and the like tend to make a mess when they poo. You may want to try the pellets. It will take a while until they eat them. It may take up to a week. A turtle that size should be fed every other or every three days. Lastly, is also sounds like your filter is not big enough. The standard is 5x exchange on a properly sized tank. It sounds like you have some decisions to make and some work to do.

sounds to me like a filtration issue. you should inveest in like a fluval 404 or a fx5

The Fx5 is a little over kill but with that size turtle it may be needed. A larger tank and a diet change my help also.

Try the Rena filstar XP3, its cheaper, and does a great job
