Every now and then Socrates will press his claws against the side of his cage and then sink a little, causing his front paws to vibrate against the glass. What's the deal?

My red ear slider Charlie does this too against the tank glass sometimes. It's a display of dominance and is also part of the "mating dance" that males do to impress females. Just to be clear, Charlie is alone in the tank, but when he sees his reflection in the glass he does this thing with his front paws (and nails) and tells his reflection to bug off. :)
