General Care Discussion :: How often should I clean out my RES's tank?

I will soon get a RES, probably a male, and will raise him in a tank. I will always feed him in a feeder tank, but, how often should I clean out his regular tank? My procedure for cleaning out his regular tank i guess would be to remove around half the water, use a PH strip to check to balances of the water, and fix it accordingly.

So how often should I clean it, and if I'm not doing it right, how else should I do it?

Well, I usually have to clean my tank once a month because I dont have that great of filters plus I have 3 Turtles in 1 50-55Gal tank. So mine gets dirty pretty quick and i feed my turtles in there home tank since im too lazy to put them in a different one for feedings which i mite do soon.

I would usually just change it when it seems like its starting to get murky or cloudy. If you have a good filtration system you can go up to like 2 months easy without having to change the water. but thats if you got a great filtration system going on.

Depends on the size of tank and what sort of filtration you have. The bigger the tank, the less you need to clean it.

I've got a 75 and 90g with an FX5 in each and do a partial water change (25-50%) about once a month, and a full filter clean every 3-4 months.

Well like i stated in the other post. you can usually find one on craigslist that someone does not need anymore that comes with its own stand and everything.

Yes, initial setup for just about any pet is expensive. A good ballpark for the least expensive setup you can have for a RES is about $300. I've spent any easy $500 for tank and filter for each of my RES, plus another $100-200 on other accessories.

But it's excellent you did your research before you got a RES! Now you've got an idea what a RES will cost, and you can start saving up a bit if you still want a RES or another kind of turtle
