Are you sure he's not going up there? Or is he doing it when your not looking. In my experience it takes quite a while to get a turtle comfortable enough to bask while your in the room or around it. My RES and YBS have been around for a long time and still will dive back in the water at the first sound of footsteps approaching them. While my cooter hatchlings will stare at you from the basking platform. Try putting a treat or something as far away from water on the basking platform as you can and see if it dissappears. They only have to get out of the water for like 15 minutes, or long enough to completely dry. You are probably just missing it. Now if you think this is wrong, I would ask, what kind of platform is it? Is the surface getting so hot it is uncomfortable to the turtle? Is it big enough for a 3 year old?
