General Care Discussion :: Need Help for Macgyver Habitat

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Ok, so a guy that lives in my dorm bought a hatchling(? - about two inches) at some sort of shady market. He thinks it's cute but isn't willing to put forth any real effort to actually care for it. He told me that if it's still alive in 2 months I could take it home. Oh and also it's against the rules to have him here....

Basically I think he's being totally callous and stupid and a bit disgusting, but I can only do so much without outright stealing the turtle. SO, I need some suggestions as to how to make sure this turtle survives these two months. I've read some stuff on this site and others and I realize that ideally turtles need a lot of care, gear, etc., but what all can I do within these restrictions (not being noticeable or taking up a lot of room, tasks I can do that won't bother this stupid guy, and so on)?

I'm specifically worried about the basking, as I read you shouldn't use the sun and I think at this point a basking lamp isn't possible. Can I move him to the window at certain times and remove him at others? Any ideas/should I be more worried about other things?

Thank you thank you thank you SO much for helping!!

A Rubbermaid container is probably the best bet for a dorm room. I've had ones as large as 60 gallons but you won't need one that large. Direct sunlight and a small tank isn't really good. Why isn't a basking lamp OK?
