the color can be that way sometimes its really nothing.

the shell, looks like it has some problems. im not sure what it is but the shell shouldn't look that way

Hmmm... well I wonder what it is. The top picture was taken right after a got him. He was rescued from the middle of a parking lot, baking in the sun. Who knows what he had gone through before that. It seems to have improved since then, but he still kinda sheds, like in the second picture.

If there is no injury or health issue here, why wouldn't you just release him in the closest pond where you found him?
If you want an RES, people give captive bread ones away on craigslist.....Take one from there.

I didn't find him. My friend works at a vet clinic, Someone found him and brought brought him in barely alive. They treated him then they were trying to find a home for him.

I live in Idaho, I figured our weather here isn't suitable for these kind of turtles. Winters are long, and the water in ponds freezes over. The vet assumed he was a lost pet.

Id say just keep the turtle.you dont know where he lives so just keep him.

I am not sure how this ended up as a discussion about me setting my turtle free in a pond. I was looking for information on his shell condition.

I never said we don't have wild turtles, it just seams like a terrible idea to set a Red Eared Slider free in a pond when I have no idea if it is a wild turtle. The veterinarian was under the impression that it was a lost pet.

I have only seen a handful of turtles here and they were all western painted turtles.

Anyone have any advice on his SHELL?
