General Care Discussion :: Water Temperature Problem

I've recently moved into a new house and am facing some water heating problems.

I have my heater all the way at low in order to keep the water temp at a stable 78 degrees, but for some reason in my new house, even though the heater is on low, the water heats up to over 80 degrees. So I'm constantly unplugging and replugging the damn thing.

I don't want to move the tank, because I don't really have anywhere else to place it. What should I do?

Three options

1. If the temperature drops when it is unplugged, then you need a new heater

2. If temperature does not drop when unplugged for a long period of time, then the room or position in room is too hot.

3. Thermometer is not reading correctly

Given that you used to have it fully turned to to maintain 78 I would first check the thermometer is working correctly, if it is and temperature drops when unplugged for a long period of time then I think you need a new heater

them-tro An accruate thermometer is a must. Your water can pick up temp from lighting and from the motor in a canister filter. It will pick up a little more if the motor is in the bottom. I have one of my tanks that is unpluged in the summer time and the water stays at 77 degrees all summer. You may want to consider that if the temps don't swing too much from day to day. Good Luck!

I didn't have to put the heater all the way up in order to maintain 78, I kept it all the way down in order to keep it at 78.

But I already fixed the problem by just placing a frozen bottle of water into the tank and it lowers the temp below 80, so all is good now.
