For one thing the photos are not very clear. I think the concern was about the brown coloration of the plastron. A better photo would help. Is that a res? I could not see the red. It looks a little like a cumberland or a mix?

Yeah i can see the red on his head.
What size of tank do you have him in? It looks like a 20 gallon. Raise up the water level till the point where he cannot climb out on his basking area.

another thing to note is that in the background of one of ur pics i can see his tank and he needs more water, you have about 2" of water when he could easily manage that tank filled to the top
65 Gallon
-1 RES (Myrtle)
-1 Pleco (unnamed)
-1 four lined pimelodus catfish (unnamed)
-1 shubunkin (unnamed)
29 Gallon Planted Tank

The carapace looks dirty to me---if you gently wipe it with a soft, moist cloth, does anything come off?

If he can't be taken out on a regular (and supervised) basis for unfiltered sunlight, then he needs a UVB light in addition to the heat source. Without the ability to bask under proper lighting, he will not have a nice shell.
