General Care Discussion :: When will my RES stop shedding?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat Jul 10, 2010 10:21 pm   When will my RES stop shedding?

My RES was shedding when i first got him. And he still is after one month. Also it seems like he is shedding really slowly because his shell looks the same as it did the first day i got him. Is there a way i can help him shed? I know feeding blueberry's helps but i haven't seen any at the stores around me yet. Also what's the average time for a turtle to complete his full shed?

Lots of UV and basking will help with shedding. As for timing, it would depend on the health of the shell.

As in UVB? Im having a hard time finding a fixture for the UVB rod i bought a few weeks ago. It's a Reptisun 10.0 UVB rod T8 24 inches. Any websites i can find a fixture for it? He basks everyday i don't know how many hours but more then 4 hours.
And what you meen the health of his shell? as in calcium and such?

UVA and UVB. Check the Zoo Med site for the type of fixtures that you need. Fungus, infections, wounds could make it difficult to shed normally.

Until you get the fixture, you should take him outside to bask in the sun.

Yeah i do but when i do it's kinda windy and i heard something about them being sensitive to drafts does wind/slight breezes count as the same?
Also he has a UVA/heat bulb right now and he has no fungus infections or wounds. But is a little bit of green stuff on his shell fine? I he a tiny big at the back of his shell.

You could bring him out even if there's a breeze, but I'd avoid cool breezes. I've generally used containers (not tanks) that are high enough to protect a turtle from being directly in the path of any wind, and for smaller turtles I like the temp to be at least 75F, perferably in the upper 70's.

There's no way it can get 75 degrees where i live its 90+ everyday. And the breezes are warm not cold.

since you're in SA, it should be fine. Just take him out in the morning or evening, not during the middle of the day when it's the hottest. Make sure he has access to a shady area and some water.

If it's that warm where you are, then I wouldn't worry about the breezes. I'd be more concerned about not having him get overheated.

If I take my turtles outside on a sunny 90 degree day just to walk around my yard and get some real sunlight, how long is it safe to keep them out there and avoid overheating?

It's 90+ here a hour seems good for my turtle because at the end of that hour he likes to go into the shade and not in the sun.
