I'm 20 now and recently rescued a male ( i think ) RES from a NYC petstore who was in an over crowded tank.
I've done a bit of reading....
He seems to have a pyramided shell, I asked the store what they were fed and he said "golfish and what ever else be dyin' or sick" so I account that to the high abundance of protein.
From what I can see, or what I know enough to look for, his shell is solid. There is 2 areas on his bottom shell that look like a split fingernail ( when the top layer splits off ). the area isn't spongy or soft. There is one area near where the shells meet that has a bit flaking off. I will try to get a picture....
I don't know if he is under weight or not, he has eaten the water sprite that was in my tank so i know he's eating something.
His eyes are open with no discharge and he is very active, either swimming or walking around.
I still need to get him a proper basking bulb and area, just waiting for the paycheck to clear and to meet up with a friend who has some old turtle stuff.
in the meantime I have been taking him out of the tank and placing him on a warmed towel under a regular light and letting him roam ( under supervision ) for about an hour or so. To make sure he has a chance to dry off.
- If this is more harmful than good please LMK so I know what to do instead.

) He shows some interest in the reptomin pellets but more so in my Topfin Cichlid pellets. He will get the occasional live food, the cicihlids eat them too. Plus he might have his fill in the next few weeks, I'm expecting a convict spawn sometime soon......
