General Care Discussion :: Luffy is acting lazy

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I got 2 baby RES a couple weeks ago. I have an internal filter and a little basking are I made out of a kitchenware item and some rocks. Bridge is a little wooden/rattan board, really light. I've seen Luffy and Ninja basking and swimming around and being all active before. I also added a bubbler rod of some sort. The internal filter's top part is just 1.5 inches below the water level, so they love to sleep there at night. I also have some stones at the bottom of my tank, not gravel, big ones, that I'm pretty sure even an adult RES wouldn't be able to swallow. I also have a cuttlebone I put behind the filter's suction cups so it won't float around because it just floats to where the ledge is and would block their basking access. I also have 2 small conch shells of some sort.

For the past 2 days Luffy has been acting a little lazy, not like Ninja, who I always see swimming around the tank. Luffy still basks but when I'm in the room he just hides in their sleeping spot above the filter. Is something wrong with him? He doesn't look like he's sick, eyes are okay, shell and skin looks fine. And he eats just fine when I transfer them to a different container for feeding. It's just that when they're in the tank and I just sit and stare at them, most of the time he's chilling on top of the filter while Ninja swims around and basks.

Need help and opinions. Thanks so much...

Oh by the way, forgot to mention. They're still really small, like 1-2 inches SCL.

Hi sagoy, that's realy weird that Luffy's being lazy like that (cute names by the way). It might be the the temperature of the water or lamp. Hatchlings (babies) need 80ºF in their basking area and water. The cold water may be making Luffy so lethargic, I'm not too sure about Ninja though. Also, that kitchenware item, is it metallic? If so then that could be poisoning the water when it rusts or ect. Also keep in mind that they are babies and babies do sleep.

@oxy The metal's not touching the water, I made sure it won't. We live in a tropical area, I don't think it might be the water temp, but I'll get a thermometer and check when I have time, maybe this weekend.

@steve When I enter the room he's basking or swimming around, but when I stay in the room he just chills on top of the filter.

I don't know if there is anything to be concerned about, just keep an eye out for any other symptoms.

let's hope Luffy the turtle won't eat as much as Luffy the captain ;)

Why the other is named Ninja? Not Zoro or the rest Mugiwara Kaizokudan (Strawhat crew)?

hahah that's because my girlfriend was the one who chose Ninja, because he was really2x active and he stood out in the tank at the pet shop. She wanted it to be like "Ninja Turtle", lulz. I was the one who chose Luffy because he was also active but not as active as Ninja. And I chose the name Luffy to give ode to the never ending debate of which one's cooler, Ninjas or Pirates.
