General Care Discussion :: Confused - filter/tank question

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

So I'm new to aquariums, so obviously I know pretty much nothing about the matter. I've been asking a friend who owns a lot of fish and tanks since he would obviously know more than me.

He says tap water is bad for my tutle and that he is now suffering from ammonia poisoning as I don't dechlorinate the water. I just use water straight from the tap to fill my tank and don't do anything to treat it. He says I need to buy an aquarium dechlorinator.

The ammonia poisoning seems far fetched so I'm coming here, as I trust you guys. Is what he says true?

EDIT: FILTER MEDIAAAA :(

I'm confused. I have a rena xp3 with spongey pads, bio max (white tubes), a piece of cloth and a bag of carbon. What is the best filter media for turtles, and how do I care for it? ie cleaning, when to replace, etc

Most of us do use stuff to reduce chlorine as it is true that Tap water can hurt their Eyes, the Ammonia Poisoning though isn't going to happen and is more something you need to worry about with fish.

Ok, thank goodness. He got me really worried there.

I've bought a bottle of prime dechlorinator and cleaned the tank and filter today... filter for the first time! Also bought a bag of ammonia remover to put in the filter since it seems carbon is mostly unnecessary. I bought this filter used and I never even bothered to look in it... but it had an ammonia remover cloth (I think thats what it was), a bag of carbon, bio max and spongey pads. I left everything in there but the cloth and carbon, which looked really worn out.

I'm hoping spongey pads (on the bottom), bio max (in the middle) and ammonia remover (on the top) is good for my turtle in this filter. :) If anyone could let me know, it would be much appreciated!

would help if you would put a picture of your set-up and filter kind.
filters are very important since you will need a filter pumping 5x the amount of water than for a regular fish... turtles are messy =)

Thanks. I wish it was a bit bigger for them but at least it stays clean.
