Ever since I moved to the city I'm in now from Boston, my female RES has had whitish parts on her shell. It is not cottony, and her shell isn't soft. They aren't round or necessarily look like shell rot, and I've always been a bit curious about why her shell is like that but it has never affected her healthwise. She basks, eats, swims, wanders around on ground like a happy turtle. She's had the coloration for maybe 5 - 6 years or her 8- 9. Our city is notorious for hard water, and the white on her shell looks curiously like the buildup I see on the faucets around here. Will the hard water hurt her? It doesn't seem to be. She lives in a 125 gallon pond outside with ample filtration and pump, but with the amount of water in there it would be insane to get filtered (purified, whatever) water.
