General Care Discussion :: Poop out, then sucked right back in

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

So I have two turtles; one is about 2 inches long and one is about 3.5 inches long. The larger one's tail looks pretty bloated and he eats a ton without me seeing any poop that often. Recently (two times in the past two weeks), I have seen what looks to be a extremely large poop (and when I say extremely large, I mean massive.) coming out of his anus. After about 10-30 seconds of it hanging on to his anus, I see it disappear back into its body. While it is out and hanging on to his anus, it looks like he is trying to use his legs to release it from his anus, however it never works. I was wondering if he is just constipated or I am not doing something right or if he is doing something strange.

Mainly, what is happening here and how can I fix it?

Thanks and respond if you need any more info. I'd really like to help my turtle.

Sounds like it was his penis, this is called "fanning". It should be fine as long as it goes back in and is not injured or bitten by the other turtle.

Yup! I looked it up after I posted this and that seems to be it. I never realized turtles were so well-endowed with the most awkward shaped penis ever.
