General Care Discussion :: Turtle squirts water out of nose.. is this ok?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi,

I don't often participate in forums so I hope I am asking in the right place. I have had my turtles for about 2 1/2 years and tonight one of my turtles rose to the surface 3 times in quick succesion during feeding and squirted water from his nose. He was rising to get more food so not specifically to do it.

For a few seconds I thought it was pretty cute then I realised in 2 1/2 years I had never seen this behaviour from any of the turtles. That seemed significant as I had already researched their care years ago and had been warned many times that bubbles/foam were to be a worry when found around the nose. So I kind of figured if you have water in an airway it's possibly going to produce foam. Should I worry?

I searched first on the forum and found this but it was just a statement made by one person. It's not that I don't trust this person it's just that I worry very much about my turtles health and I would like it verified if possible.. Is this statement true? Will the vet just laugh? I can't call my vet yet anyway, I only just noticed and it's late here. The vets will be closed for another 10 hours.

My Beaker does that too. Also she sometimes shoots water out of her nose when she surfaces......I called the Vet and he laughed at me....... "Make it turtle proof, and they'll build a better turtle."

I can't call my vet yet anyway, I only just noticed and it's late here. The vets will be closed for another 10 hours.

Thanks in advance!

Mine does the same thing its pretty cute. I figure just water in her nose and when she surfaces she breathes out forcing the water out. I don't think its something to be concerned about

It's normal. Someone has previously described it as a firefighter impression :)

Mine does it while eating lettuce. I think it expels the water in its mouth/throat or something when they bite down.
