i have a 3" res thats in a fish tank. he/she has a basking pad and other cool things to enjoy. he/she has been happy, but recently my walmart water filter has stopped repeadidly. i continue to prime it, but it cuts off even though i have the water level 2" above the inlet. do i need more water, or a diff kinda water pump? please respond fast, as i dont want the res's enviornment to go bad. thank you Loola

What kinda filter do ya have? What's your setup like?

I think your problem with the filter is that the water level isn't high enough. Those types of filter tend not to be strong enough to pull water up the inlet tube too far. It will then lose it's prime and stop running. I've had that problem in the past myself. The easiest thing to do would be to raise the water level if possible. You could try a more powerful hang-on style filter or if finances allow, a canister would more than likely solve your dilemma.

i plan on building a larger tank. maybe 100 gal or less. what kind of pump can i buy and use now that would work in my future larger tank?

I have a Fluval 405 running on my 55 gallon and it works well. A tank bigger than that you might want to go for an FX5, or something equivalent.

A canister filter Rena XP 4 would be my suggestion for a 100 gallon tank. You want double to triple the amount of filtration for a turtle. Filters are rated for fish not turtles. Turtles are messier. Also you might want to remove the gravel from your aquarium. Turtles can eat it and become impacted which could be deadly. Most of us use sand, large river rocks or bare bottom. It also makes it easier to clean and keep your water quality good since all the waste isn't going into the rocks. I use sand.

How big is the tank now and when do you think you'll get the new tank? You don't want to put a powerful filter in a small tank.
