General Care Discussion :: new turtle friend how do painted turtles and RES get along?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Caught a painted turtle this weekend and have done parasite and other treatments as well as kept the new friend quarentined but am curious if the 2 will get along well enough to keep them in the same 10 gallon for a while. Neither are bigger then a golf ball and neither seem to be aggressive just jumpy at whatever moves outside their tanks (so everything ha!) Any advice would be helpful!!!

You are going to need a tank way bigger than a 10, and since they're young they might get along.

Well I know I'm going to need a bigger tank but a friend of mine is using my 20 gallon for his axtlotl until he can get one of his own so hopefully in a couple of weeks I will have it back and I'm planning on making the diy filter system this weekend so I won't be cleaning the water out everyday but I was curious to if there were any major fighting or health concerns other then the parasite treatment since the painted is a wild caught

Well if you wanna be extra safe then quarantine the turtles for 90 days. Some actually do more. 20 might be manageable now but you should go bigger. They're gonna grow quick, I do believe that painteds stay a little smaller than RES. I think you might need like a 100 gal at least. Even so, if your RES is a female and gets big (10+ inches), you might want to go bigger plus the added space will lessen the chance of squabbling. If/once they start fighting you might have to permanently separate.

Well the vet told me that as long as I soaked the new turtle in the parasite treatment for an hour and the fugus treatment for an hour and quarentined it for 24-48 hours before I put it with my RES it would be ok and that the 20 gallon would be perfectly fine until they reach about 3" I was more curious as to the temperment of both which seems to be alright so far the only thing the painted turtle had attacked is food, the cuttle bone and the thermometer other then that the 2 have just been basking at opposite sides of the platform.
