General Care Discussion :: Eggs for the first time, please help fast!

Hi.

We have 4 turtles, 2 red eared sliders and 2 yellow bellied. We saw a yellow bellied mate with a red eared and well don't know what else happened but both of the red eared sliders got pregnant.

Well they have laid their eggs now and we created a incubator and put the eggs in there very carefully without turning them of course.
The thing is that we don't know if the eggs are fertile and the incubator is good enough.

Don't even know if red eared sliders and yellow bellied turtles can mate and create working eggs.

If you look at these pictures you can see how we have it.

On the first time you see the setup. The weird thing is that we have created like a area where they can lay the eggs but they aren't laying them there. They are laying them openly on top of the ground, don't even dig them down.


And the second pictures are the eggs. Could someone take a look at it and report back to me what i can do and if it looks okey. I'd love some advice about our setup and things we can do.

Any help is appreciated!

Hi, I'll wait until someone more experienced with eggs chimes but they can have viable eggs. A turtle's first clutch usually isn't her best and it looks like one egg has already collapsed.

Yea one of them have collapsed.. should i remove it?

First, yes res/ybs can create viable eggs. It is the whole reason Florida has banned all red eared sliders in their state. Captive res being released into the wild are breeding with the local ybs and pretty much destroying true ybs species there.

Second, looking at the eggs, the female obviously didnt intake enough calcium. The shells of the eggs look very thin. So during final stages of the develope ment the eggs could break open which could kill the embryo.

3rd, in my opinion you always destroy the eggs. You shouldnt create hybrid turtle breeds.

Destorying the eggs are out of the question... but yea the calcium issue could very much be true.. How often do turtles lay eggs?

2 and 23 eggs per clutch, up 5 clutches per year and they will lay every year.

Also turtles will lay eggs even if they are alone so no way to tell if the eggs were fertilized

my albino res group had eggs back in march 22, 2011.... a few of them should be hatching anytime soon... from the looks of your eggs, they seem like it MAY be fertile...you would have to wait atleast a few days to a week to see the "red ring" embryo inside.... if you dont see anything after a week and its still the same yellowish color throughout the egg, then its not fertile.... after a couple weeks to 3 weeks, you will see a lot of veins if its fertile..hope that helps
