i have a friend that's moving and going to give me a 55 gallon tank and her res, my question is what size filter do i need to get. She's never used the 55 so i need to get a filter

You would need a filter rated for three times the water volume. So a filter rated for 165 gallons or above. I use the Rena XP3 on my 55 gallon. It's rated for 175 gallons.

+1 for the xp3 on a 55.

However, you're probably going to outgrow that 55 in the not so distant future. If you're going to go out and make a filter purchase, you might consider spending a few extra $$ now on a xp4 or fluval fx5. Both of those will handle your 55 with ease, but will also work on a larger tank should you get one in the future.

I know I'm going to out grow it SIGH. Unfortunately this is a rescue RES. Had to learn about turtles real fast. Really rough financial times, lost business after 12 years, bankruptcy and trying to sell the house right now with 2 young children. So Rocky, much to my dismay turns out to be a female. Sigh even bigger tank in my future. But for now we'll have to do with lots of water changes and filter cleanings for now. So far Rocky is 4.5 inches.
