Just switched my two RES into a new home, im worried the water may be two high. Both turtles are about the size of my palm. They look like they arent having trouble getting around. I have two floating rocks setup, for some reason they havent made it ontot he big one yet. There are some decent under ground rocks and plants for them to cling to to get above sea level.

The tank is a odd one, 80 Gallon wide breeder. I'd say about 45 50 gallons are in it, it's more than half filled

From what I've gathered, RES are excellent swimmers. The more water the better.

That's fine. You can add even more water if you want, though you'll need to add a screen to prevent escape. You also need to be aware of the basking light's distance, so the temperature is roughly 10F warmer than the water. The basking light and UVB light should be positioned over the basking area.

Thanks Steve. I got the repti sun UVB bulb in a flukers 10', clamped to the side now. Is that bad news to have it in a flukers?

gonna hit up home depot this weekend, i wanna build a second layer like i see on other tanks. you cant tell but the tank is alot wider than it appears. it is really a weird shape tank, almost as wide as it is long

Going to take it back tomorrow, I have a basic UVA bulb which should be ok till tomorrow

Repti glo seems like it is safe. Havent seen anything about it

That's an old thread from when they were having problems. You don't have to take it back unless you see problems with the turtles eyes. Even then you can just raise it up so it's farther from the basking area. Just read the directions and make sure the height you have it at now is within recommendations. I don't know if the problems were with just Flukers or all compact coil UVB bulbs. I use a compact and have had absolutely no problems.

The main problems were with the Zoo Med Reptisuns. Supposedly, they didn't change anything besides adding a warning to the instructions despite the evidence presented. The main problems were with the high output 10.0, so a 5.0 is safer. Just remember to do a "burn-in" with any UVB device and keep an eye out for behavioral or physical changes (mainly swelling around the eyes).

I have not heard of specific problems with Flukers or Reptigo, but they're not as strong as a Reptisun either.

I was thinking replacing my 5.0 with a 10.0 UVB. The light would be roughly 13 inches away from the basking area, is that safe?

No way to be certain until you try. Make sure you burn-in the bulb and keep an eye on things.

keep it further from the usual distance. look around for the correct distance because im not 100 percent. but in the first like 100 hours usually they give off more wavelengths that can harm the turtle
