Fading color is not really a symptom that I know of. Changes in diet and melanism may have an impact on color.

As for what to worry about, well, that really depends on his setup and diet.

Aren't RES sometimes born with faded red marks? I've seen a few of them out there like that....

I thought the red just fades a tad when they get older?

Yes, worry that he isn't set up right, and do some research as to what he needs to thrive!
i.e.--he needs to swim--not just have "a little water to sit on" (separate tank?)
