General Care Discussion :: Turtle passed away.....

I'm new here. My son had a Redear Slider, he found him in a lake. We had a 100 gal aquarium with everything he needed. He became friendly very fast. We had him about 3 months and he was fine. The day he passed away I noticed he was acting werid. Stayed in his shell alot, when I would pick him up and talk to him he came out, didnt move much.. that night he passed. Just wondering what could of happend to him, seemed like it happend very fast. This was our first turtle, crazy how much I miss that little guy.... He passed 2 weeks ago and I can't help but keep wondering what was wrong with him. Thanks.

If you still have that great 100gal. tank., and you love turtles--did you ever consider rescuing an unwanted turtle? Like, one that someone got for their kids and was little--but now is bigger and they can't manage?

I am so sorry to hear that . I agree with Miss Tee. All the RES rescues are packed full and cannot take any more turtles.. it would be awesome if you could adopt one of those guys.

Did your turtle have a basking area, basking lamps, water heater, and what filter did you have? Was he eating? Did you have gravel in the tank?

Oh please rescue a turtle if you can. You'll get the warm fuzzies for doing so. There's a turtle in urgent care that needs a home. A college kid who's parents aren't taking care of his turtle while he's in school. Check it out. I'm sorry about your little one. It's amazing how quickly we become attached.

He had all of those things. The filter says Tetra on it. I bought it at Petco for about $60. He didn't care too much for the turtle food so we feed him worms and kreel things like that he loved. There was nothing on the bottom the the tank other than plants and plastic log. My sister in law recently gave us some sort of Map Turtle, He is very small. I havn't put him in the big tank yet. He is in a small tank right now. He likes to hold his head above the water alot so I wasn't sure about putting him in the big tank. Would he be fine in the big tank? Where would I find a place to adopt turtles? Would another get along with the one we have? Thanks for all of the info!

How much did you feed your RES those things? How big was he?

How big is the small tank?

He ate about 4 to 5 worms, a few krill and a few pieces of turtle food a day. Not sure how big he was... maybe 2 or 3 inches??

The small tank the new turtle is in maybe 5 gallons

Sounds like your gonna need a more powerful filter for your 100 gallon.
