General Care Discussion :: Sexual maturity issues -Gravid female slider?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I`m editing my request for information because I just did some searching on this site and I got the info I needed....it seems some females will lay eggs and some won`t. I don`t think there is a more scientific response available. So unless someone has some diffierent views...I don`t need a reply.

By stepdaughter has a female Slider who is now approaching 3 years old. The pet seems content and healthy...overweight as we feed it way too often for a cold-blooded animal. I`m concerned about it`s sexual maturity. I`ve read that even without a male present, the female Slider can become gravid. Yikes, the steps needed to create a egg-laying box - (which could be needed a couple of times a year) seems to be much more trouble than one would want from owing a pet turtle. However, as a responsible co/owner I`d like educate myself about the subject before `Edna' becomes gravid. To benefit from experiences of other owners of female red-ear sliders I`d like to ask the following.

Do females often become gravid when no male is present?
What is your experience with a redear slider housed in a rubbermaid container - will she become gravid a couple of times a year?

I would like to be able to offer more concrete information regarding this. It would be great if diet and habitat conditions would tell us what to expect but it is random or genetically influenced.

One of the old mods raised 2 hatchlings, possible from the same clutch. Both were females and kept in the same tank with each other and no other turtles. Once mature, one turtle would regularly lay eggs while the other didn't.

Mine did the same thing. One does and one doesnt. Mine that does always lays after a tank upgrade. I couldnt get mine to lay eggs in a nesting box but I plan on making one that attaches to the tank so she would be more comfortable.

Thanks Steve and `Sflemin2` for the replies. I`ll keep an eye on things and I`ll report back if Edna ever lays some eggs.
I<m enjoying going over some of the older posts to gather information. Thanks again
