General Care Discussion :: I just cant figure it out.

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

So i go to the local reptile shop. they have 5 red ear sliders. all huuuuuuge. dinner plate sizes, with heads the size both my thumbs combined. my female turtle is 10 years old, prolly at least twice as old as theirs, yet my turtle dwarfs in size. first half of its life it lived in a small thing of water, no uvb, nothing and only ate pellets. its habitat and lifestyle has been fixed, but still fairly small. 6 inches-ish. permanently stunted growth? i wouldnt mind, cuz those huge turtles look hard to maintan.

It's possible they were overfed (I see a lot of pet store RES only get fed goldfish) or they're older, wild caught RES. But genetics play a role too, I'm surprised my female is not any bigger.

Ya my Female tops out at 8-9" and she's 12 years old. Then again, she did spend the first few years no UVB.

It almost makes me think of depriving the Princess of some her amenities in order to keep her small!

But as it is, she's got UVA, UVB, a great filter, a big tank, an ABTA, quality heater. a mom who makes her food...if only I lived as well!

Unless there's a small bird that lives in her tail so when it lays eggs, it looks like she is :P

i tried to take some pictures, but i was abyssmal at it. she/he bit the hell out of my finger and wouldnt let go. i couldnt get good pics of the tail or claws, so i basically only have pictures of how big it is, and she/he looks a lot bigger when out of the tank.

Its hard to tell, but it looks like a she. Both males and females can flutter.

Though the pic is blurry, her front claws look just like my Trevor's front claws- short. Female for sure I'd say, like my Trevor.
